Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, is said to have reached out to AI specialists in recent weeks to put together a team to create a chatbot similar to ChatGPT’s OpenAI.
According to The Information, which cited sources familiar with the situation, the head of Twitter has hired AI researcher Igor Babuschkin, who specializes in creating machine-learning models that power chatbots like ChatGPT. Mr. Musk, who co-founded OpenAI in 2015 but cut ties with the startup in 2018, has called ChatGPT “scary good”.
Mr. Musk remarked “We are not far from dangerously strong AI,” following ChatGPT’s widespread release in December.
The Tesla founder, though, claimed the technology sounded “eery” when Microsoft revealed it would include the AI tool into its own Bing search engine.
“Sounds eerily like the AI in System Shock that goes haywire & kills everyone,” he said, referring to a destructive AI system from a 1994 video game. The multibillionaire attacked OpenAI for the measures it took to prevent ChatGPT from writing abusive content and referred to the chatbot as an illustration of “teaching AI to be woke”.
Following its general release in December, ChatGPT rose to popularity for its capacity to provide text responses that resembled those of humans in response to a variety of queries.
Many AI experts have predicted that the chatbot’s introduction heralded the arrival of AI tools that would revolutionize entire industries and probably even replace tools like Google’s search engine, while others have noted that the chatbot occasionally tended to provide answers that were obviously wrong but had a plausible appearance.
The risks posed by AI systems have also been publicly discussed by Mr. Musk, who refers to them as “humanity’s biggest threat.”
“AI is one of the biggest threats to the survival of civilisation. But AI may be both good and bad; it holds out immense promise and capacity, but also great risk,” he has previously stated.
Now, it’s been claimed that the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX and Mr. Babuschkin talked about putting together a team to conduct AI research.
The Information stated that Mr. Babuschkin has not formally endorsed the Musk proposal and that the idea appears to still be in its early phases without a clear plan to create specific items.
