Sahara Group Foundation Supports Emerging Innovators Across Africa

In a dynamic event that celebrated creativity, innovation, and a dedication to shaping the future of Africa, the Sahara Group Foundation recently hosted the second edition of the Sahara STEAMers Programme National Demo Day competition.

Launched in 2022 as an after-school initiative in collaboration with STEMCafe, the Sahara STEAMers programme focuses on fostering innovation, creativity, and excellence in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) education among secondary school students across Africa.

The initiative equips participants with the knowledge and skills needed to develop innovative solutions addressing real-world problems in sectors such as energy, agriculture, security, healthcare, and transportation. By doing so, the program plays a pivotal role in nurturing a pipeline of Africa’s next generation leaders and social innovators.

This year’s Nigerian Demo Day Event featured students from Igbobi Boys College and Oshodi High School. Working collaboratively in teams, these students presented their innovative solutions to a panel of judges. The event showcased a diverse group of young Nigerian problem solvers, unveiling prototype designs poised to address prevalent social issues in their communities.

Ejiro Gray, Director of Sahara Group Foundation, expressed immense pride in the participating teams, highlighting the intelligence, creativity, and passion displayed by the students. Gray congratulated all participants and urged them to leverage the skills acquired from the program to drive positive change in society.

After a compelling competition, the judges commended the students for their confidence and ability to develop viable solutions. The winning teams were announced as follows: Team TechRats from Oshodi High School secured first place with a sustainable Automatic Wheelchair solution addressing the mobility needs of the elderly. Team Young Genius from Oshodi High School claimed second place with their innovative Domestic Drainage System, while Team Spark from Igbobi Boys College secured third place with their cutting-edge Home Power Management System solution.

The Sahara STEAMers National Demo Day competition underscores the Sahara Group Foundation’s steadfast commitment to a sustainable Africa. Through strategic investments in programs like Sahara STEAMers, the foundation aims to catalyze enduring and impactful development across the continent.

As these young innovators embark on their journey with newfound knowledge and resources, the Sahara Group Foundation remains dedicated to empowering Africa’s future leaders and driving positive change through innovation.
