AURORA TECH AWARDS 2024 TO EMPOWER WOMEN IN TECH, CALLS FOR ENTRIES

The Aurora Tech Awards have announced that entries for the 2024 Aurora Tech Awards are now open.

In a world where achieving gender equality remains an ongoing challenge, the African technology sector is currently undergoing a significant transformation, which is exemplified by the prestigious Aurora Tech Awards. Established in the year 2020, the Aurora Tech Awards represent an annual global celebration that recognizes female founders of IT startups who are pushing boundaries and challenging stereotypes within the tech industry.

The profound shift in Africa’s technological landscape was unmistakably evident during the 2023 Aurora Tech Awards ceremony. A substantial number of nominations showcased the remarkable accomplishments of African women in the tech sector, hailing from countries such as Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya, and Uganda. These visionary women lead IT startups that have not only brought substantial value to their communities but have also harnessed technology to bridge gaps in essential areas like education, healthcare, and finance. Furthermore, they have passionately supported fellow entrepreneurs in their journeys. The 2023 award ultimately went to Elizabeth Mwangi from Kenya and her startup, Gwiji for Women, which connects cleaners living in Nairobi’s slums with their clients.

The mission of the Aurora Tech Awards can be summarized in three key aspects: to celebrate the achievements of women in IT entrepreneurship, to provide them with the resources they deserve through substantial cash prizes, and to dismantle the gender biases that have long restricted the industry.

“In a tech industry still grappling with gender disparity, awards like the Aurora Tech Award serve as catalysts for change. Our recognition empowers women, breaks down barriers, and inspires young minds. The positive feedback from past winners underscores the transformative impact. As applications pour in from around the world, we are excited to spotlight talents making community-changing impacts and serving as role models. We envision a future where gender is no longer a limiting factor. This award is not just about recognition; it’s a step towards a more inclusive and innovative tomorrow,” says Ekaterina Smirnova, the executive director of the Aurora Tech Award.

The Aurora Tech Award signals a future where innovation knows no gender boundaries and where the potential of women flourishes unhindered. It is not merely about shattering glass ceilings but about creating an industry that stands as a testament to the abilities of all individuals, regardless of gender.

To be eligible for the award, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  1. Women Founder: The startup must be founded, co-founded, and led by a woman entrepreneur.
  2. Funding Stage: The startup should not have received investments exceeding $4 million in funding, including the seed round.
  3. Operation Time: The startup must be no more than 5 years old.
  4. Minimum Viable Product (MVP): The startup should have a functional prototype. Applications with only an idea will not be considered.
